Behind the Scenes: Shop window displays for Dallmayr, Munich

In this post, I would like to give you a behind-the-scenes look at my latest project. It’s about the illustrations for four pop-up windows for Dallmayr in Munich, and with this implementation, a small dream of mine has come true.

The four themes Selection of the Year, Flight Tea, Dallmayr Capsa, and Delicacies were initially thought of by me with very quick pencil sketches. The llamas fit perfectly with the Crema d’Oro from Peru, while the peacock could accompany the delicacies from Dallmayr. Of course, the Dallmayr saleswoman in a white apron in front of the coffee vases should not be missing! In the fourth window, the most exclusive tea from Dallmayr should be showcased: Darjeeling from the first flush in spring. For this, I decided on a tea picker on the plantation. Above her, the freshly picked tea is being sent by air mail to Dienerstrasse.

In the next step, the unfinished illustrations are then worked out and colored with watercolor paints. I then print the scans in different sizes to test the size ratios in small models.

Seeing the small worlds as shop window backdrops on different levels is very important because they are already very close to the final implementation. This allows for everything to be moved and tested to ensure the elements are in the right place. Afterwards, the illustrations were scanned at a large size and upscaled in order to print them life-size on foam boards and plot the cutting contours.

In the final step, you can see the finished windows of the Dallmayr Delikatessenhaus, where the wonderful decor team then applied my illustrations and decorated them with the real products. A special challenge was that the windows also had to function as store decoration when viewed from the inside in reverse. You can best see this during your next visit to Dallmayr. A heartfelt project that will be on display for the next 6 weeks (April/May) at Dienerstrasse in Munich. How do you like the shop windows?!
