We did it. Finally, a weekend just for the two of us — and in a setting that couldn’t be more fairy-tale like. In this Travel Diary, I’m taking you with my illustrations to the Blue Castle in Pfronten, Allgäu.
The journey itself is already impressive: the Blue Castle (formerly Burghotel Falkenstein) sits at an altitude of 1,250 meters, right next to the highest castle complex in Germany. The hotel has only 16 rooms and suites, and its family-friendly, warm atmosphere is felt from the first to the last moment. In the small wellness area, you don’t need a book to keep busy, because the panoramic view over Füssen and Neuschwanstein Castle, as well as the castle ruins on the other side, immediately captivate you.

In addition to the panoramic views and the unique atmosphere, there’s another highlight: the cuisine of Simon Schlachter, who earned a Michelin star with his restaurant Pavo, making him Bavaria’s youngest star chef. The four-course menu, which is part of the hotel’s “royal pampering package,” is not only top-tier gourmet cuisine but also visually inspiring. Our weekend was truly magical, but I think the Travel Diary and the images speak for themselves.

As part of this post, I can also show you a few of my works that I had the pleasure of creating for the Blaue Burg, which were implemented on several glass doors and windows. A peacock, a falcon, and Simon’s kitchen utensils now have their place in the hotel’s beautiful interior. Be sure to take a look yourself! If you’re not staying overnight, the trip there is also highly recommended for lunch or dinner, and the afternoon cake is excellent. By the way, it takes about two hours to get there from Munich. It’s important to note that there are specific times for driving up and down the mountain. However, it’s best to hike up as the view from the forest paths is simply stunning.
