Drawn to Summer — a summer evening where illustration meets interior at MALLUVIA

Some pictures don’t want to simply hang on a white wall. They want a room around them. That’s exactly where “Drawn to Summer” came from — an aperitivo on a July evening that Marcella Breugl and I hosted together for the first time.

Marcella opened up her studio: MALLUVIA, right in the heart of Maxvorstadt, a few steps from the Pinakotheken. Not a neutral exhibition space, but a lived-in world of furniture, warm light and bold colour. The perfect place to try out what happens when illustration and interior don’t just stand side by side, but interlock.

A drawing we built a summer around

The heart of the evening was “Crane Expectations”. Instead of framing the piece and hanging it, Marcella and I set it on a round table and staged a whole little world around it: blossoms and citrus fruit, layered piece by piece, until picture and table became a single still life — one you could walk into, rather than past.

Marcella has the eye for the space, I brought the line. Somewhere in the middle the two met. A second piece is painted straight onto wood, unframed, against the leopard wallpaper — motif, furniture and colour blend so naturally that you can hardly tell where one ends and the other begins.

A full room, late into the night

The room filled early and stayed full for a long time. People looked, asked, raised a glass and lingered — and that was exactly the idea: not the passing-through of a vernissage, but an evening to stay a while, where the works became part of the conversation.

For me, “Drawn to Summer” was more than an exhibition. It was proof that an illustration works best when it animates a place, rather than merely decorating it. Thank you to Marcella for the idea, the space and the collaboration — hopefully there’s more of this to come.
